The activities of the Coastal Morphodynamics-Management and Marine Geology Group focus on the study of the coastal zone, with its main aims being the education/training of undergraduate and postgraduate students and basic and applied research.
The main objectives of the Laboratory are to educate undergraduate and postgraduate students and to conduct basic and applied research in the following thematic areas:
(i) Hydrodynamic, sediment-dynamic, and morphodynamic processes in the coastal zone, with emphasis on the interactions among waves, currents, and sediments and their effects on shoreline evolution, including erosion and accretion. This research is based on high-frequency field observations and numerical modeling.
(ii) Modeling of coastal waves and wave-generated currents to investigate and predict their interactions with coastal structures.
(iii) Assessment and evaluation of coastal flooding, including flooding caused by storm surges, extreme waves, and sea-level rise.
(iv) Geomorphology and sedimentology of coastal and marine areas, focusing on the morphology, composition, and evolution of coastal and marine environments.
(v) Coastal and marine geohazards, including submarine landslides, active faults, the presence of gases and gas hydrates in seabed sediments, and submarine gullies. The Laboratory also investigates the effects of these hazards on coastal and offshore infrastructure, including ports, submarine power and fiber-optic cables, offshore pipelines, platforms, and drilling sites.
(vi) Prospecting and evaluation of marine aggregate deposits for beach nourishment and construction purposes, together with assessment of the environmental impacts associated with their extraction.
(vii) Monitoring and modeling of the transport, diffusion, dispersion, and fate of sediments and environmental pollutants in terrestrial, coastal, and marine environments.
(viii) Hydrological analysis and management planning at the drainage-basin scale, with emphasis on monitoring and modeling hydrological processes and studying extreme events, including river floods and droughts.
(ix) Investigation of the effects of climate variability and climate change, including sea-level rise, storm surges, extreme waves, river floods, and droughts, as well as the development of appropriate management approaches at the drainage-basin and coastal-zone scales.
The complex nature of coastal and marine processes requires holistic and interdisciplinary approaches. To this end, the Laboratory collaborates with all members and laboratories of the Department of Oceanography and Marine Biosciences. It also collaborates with scientists from universities, research institutions, and institutes in Greece and abroad.
The Laboratory also provides applied research and scientific support services related to these research themes to local and national authorities, international organizations, and the private sector.

The Group also owns a variety of hand-held equipment for coastal studies, such as GPS systems Simrad και Garmin, a Nikon Laser 1200s distance finder, hand-held echosounders and underwater video cameras (GoPro Hero3), conductivity, temperature and PH sensors (Delta OHM HD 2156.1), as well as various data loggers.
The geological lab equipment consists of standard equipment of sediment analysis (sieves, pipettes, balances, stereoscopic microscopes, etc). In addition, there is access to the other research labs of the Department for specialised geochemical analysis of sediments.
The group has developed/modified 1-D and 2-D research and operational models for the simulation of coastal and hydrodynamics, river hydrology and geochemistry. It has also developed new methods for the high frequency coastal monitoring, through the collection of coastal images. It has also developed software toolboxes for (a) the analysis of high-frequency hydrodynamic and sediment dynamics observations, (b) image processing and analysis of the coastal video images, and (c) the estimation of sea level rise-induced beach retreat using ensemble modelling (in co-operation with UNEP-GRID). The group also has access to a variety of commercial software such as software for processing of marine geophysical data (e.g. SonarWiz Map-Chesapeake Technology).
